Japanese Nu-metal band CHOKE unleashed the music video for “Crisis Phase”, which serves as a prelude for their long-awaited new album “CHOKE3” coming this fall. The band has been defying the limits of genres with their experimental music, staying true to themselves with every release.

“Crisis Phase”, written and composed by vocalist/rapper REON, can be described as the outcome of the great impact of Trap Metal in CHOKE’s style over the years. Although is simpler compared with all previous works, it integrates heavy details resulting in a trap song with explosive energy.

Artists such as Ghostemane and Scarlxrd have been expanding Trap Metal throughout the underground scene and taking it into a new form of extreme music in recent years. Since this style was born out of elements from Nu-Metal and Industrial Metal, it was natural for CHOKE to take influence from it.

This time, guitarist KVYA NONO (who has been the composer of all the songs released so far), was only in charge of the arranging and mixing, entrusting all the composing to rapper REON. This is only one of the positive changes in the direction that the band has been taking.

In addition to the music video for “Crisis Phase”, the band announced the release of a new album after three years, “CHOKE3”. This will come out in October 2022 and, like its sold-out predecessor, it’s expected to be in high demand.

The band will be celebrating their 5th anniversary with the event “BEEF” on August 5 in Tokyo, featuring a line-up of unique aggressive acts that aligns with CHOKE’s style.

La banda japonesa de nu-metal CHOKE ha estrenado el video musical de “Crisis Phase”, un preludio a su esperado nuevo álbum “CHOKE3”, el cual llegará este otoño. La banda ha desafiado los límites de los géneros con su música experimental, mientras se mantiene fiel a sí misma con cada lanzamiento.

“Crisis Phase”, escrita y compuesta por el vocalista/rapero REON, puede describirse como el resultado del gran impacto del trap metal en el estilo de CHOKE a lo largo de los años. Pese a ser más simple en comparación con todos los trabajos anteriores, esta integra detalles pesados que dan como resultado una canción de trap que irradia una energía explosiva.

Artistas como Ghostemane y Scarlxrd han expandido el trap metal a través de la escena underground y lo han convertido en una nueva forma de música extrema en años recientes. Dado a que este estilo nació de los elementos del nu-metal y el metal industrial, fue natural para CHOKE tomar influencia de este.

The band CHOKE has recently released their digital single Hack to the basic. With the world immersed in fear and panic due to the invisible threat of coronavirus, this year CHOKE is not focusing on the COVID-19 virus itself. The band is mocking the hysterical society and expressing the importance to evaluate ourselves, just as they did with the cynical approach on their past digital singles No problem at all and The Human Anthem.

In contrast to the alternative loud compositions, loaded with intricate elements and harsh lyrics, of “No problem at all” and “The Human Anthem”; CHOKE gets fully into nu-metal with “Hack to the basic” and declares through the positive attitude framed into the lyrics and the melody that they’re will continue making their way out no matter the circumstances. Hopefully, this interview will help others to understand what CHOKE wants to convey. 

Rather than pointing out a problem like in our past two releases, I was eager to make a more optimistic and enjoyable song.

CHOKE has declared through “Hack to the basic” that music venues are your living space. Aren’t they?

REON: As a band, it’s all about live performances. At the moment, every venue is implementing its own safety guidelines such as “you can only raise your voice if you’re using a mask” or “moshing is prohibited”. We can’t have the same atmosphere, so it’s also difficult for the audience to have fun as before. In this case, CHOKE is taking the initiative to show a new way to enjoy concerts. That feeling was injected into “Hack to the basic” and I hope all of you can feel it as well. At the same time, it is a remark of our determination to move forward. The music has an upbeat vibe, I think that serves as a good hook.

Compared to the digital singles No problem at all and The Human Anthem, this new single is a lot catchier indeed.

REON: “Hack to the basic” is a groovy song. For this reason, rather than pointing out a problem like in our past two releases, I was eager to make a more optimistic and enjoyable song.

Did you compose this song with the intention of having a “good hook” in mind?

KVYA NONO: At our beginnings, others often referred to CHOKE as a “nu-metal revival band”. Since last year, we have constantly performed along with bands from the metalcore scene and heavy visual kei acts. We realized that there lots of great metalcore bands. That made us reflect on which direction we should move next and what kind of music we should play. We talked about “getting back to our nu-metal roots”, that’s how this work was made with that intention. Actually, the idea of making a song with a nu-metal taste has been always in the air, but we missed the right time to release it. We were finally able to do it. Also, our support drummer Toshiya Sato has a style that emphasizes the groove. I was strongly inspired by that and gave me that boost to return to our nu-metal origins.

Toshiya Sato: When I got the demo, KVYA NONO told me that he wanted to make this song with a great focus on the catchiness. Thus, I tried to blend my own beat with CHOKE’s world, without overlooking REON’s rap and the rhythm from the strings team.

B5: We formed this band because all the members shared the same music background and we were on the same channel regarding the kind of music we wanted to make. As the result of getting back to that point and approaching it in a new way, “Hack to the basic” is the evolved sound of the style that we were carrying along since our beginnings.

“Hack to the basic” was born from the scent of the nu-metal movement, which was popular in the early 2000s, fused with elements from the old-school hip hop and a mixture of the atmosphere of the Japanese style.

When I listened to “Hack to the basic”, I got the feeling of “mixture” that is often used in the Japanese scene.  You can feel the aura of those days from the song.

B5: “Hack to the basic” was born from the scent of the nu-metal movement, which was popular in the early 2000s, fused with elements from the old-school hip hop and a mixture of the atmosphere of the Japanese style. We have been lived immersed in that air. We thought it would be great to bring out a band that delivers the vibe of those years but with a fresh style. We made “Hack to the basic” with that in mind and I think that the song definitely pulls it off.  

It seems like CHOKE is evoking nostalgia without being utterly retro.

B5: We added scratching and brought over some of the typical touches, but it projects a modern groove too. But more than anything, the most important subject in “Hack to the basic” is to have fun.

KVYA NONO: In my interpretation of nu-metal, the key point is the implementation of sampling in conjunction with a touch of hip hop. This release was focused on such elements; for this reason, the B-track, “Stay high (retake)”, is a song that features scratching and samples of a female voice. Moreover, I deliberately prioritized a downer and loose mood in contrast to the slam energy from the 2000s and the characteristic “hey” flow from classic hip hop. “Hack to the basic” is a song with a shuffle feel; however, it doesn’t feel like a bouncy beat because I tried to eliminate all the swing as much as possible. In particular, I think the guitar conveys an underground vibe.

CHOKE is not the kind of band that makes music for boisterous parties, right?

KVYA NONO: No. I mean, I can’t see REON shouting “Oh, yeah!” at a concert. Can you? Certainly, the song has a strong taste of hip hop and it carries a cool vibe that resembles a party style, but the chorus has some influence of the loose mood and mature chords from city pop. CHOKE is the kind of band that can turn this into a downer. I was very conscious of this when I made it.

B5: Nevertheless, in concerts, this song stands out from others because of its cool groove. The lyrics of “Hack to the basic” are interesting since people can make different interpretations. Depending on the listener’s perspective, it can be positive or negative. I hope you can see it as a song which meaning it’s up to each person.

Instead of making adjustments, even if we have to start all over, we need to create a new way to live. Otherwise, the situation where we and our close ones stand now won’t change.

Please talk about the feelings packed into the lyrics of “Hack to the basic”.

REON: Our lives have been at the mercy of the coronavirus crisis since last year. We haven’t found a solution yet, so we are still in chaos. I felt like this at the beginning of the past spring when around May or June the people in power gave the guidelines on how we should proceed. The fact is that they didn’t show us anything. Or maybe they did, but that didn’t resonate with me at all and I couldn’t see anything for the future. I thought “if we have to wait for someone to guide us, we’ll just get stuck”. “No problem at all” and “The Human Anthem” were born from that anxiety and discontent. I wanted to encourage people to choose their own path to move forward through these songs. I could have expressed my dissatisfaction once again, but I wanted to go in a more positive direction. Therefore, I included an optimistic message into the track.

Respecting the sound, as the other members already said, nu-metal is the basics of my own musical style. The composition itself was made with the purpose of “getting back to our basics” and the lyrics also expressed the idea of “back to the basic[s]”. However, there was no good twist, so I changed the first letter to turn it into “Hack to the basic”. This way it has the meaning of “cut off” or “hack”. In other words, it means “to wreck the current set of basics”. That foundation led to the actual lyrics.

With “to wreck the current set of basics”, do you mean “let’s change our present situation and the world”?

REON: If this self-isolation mood continues for a while, we will get used to it and this lifestyle will become the norm. And judging from how things are going on nowadays, this situation will remain the same. Instead of making adjustments, even if we have to start all over, we need to create a new way to live. Otherwise, the situation where we and our close ones stand now won’t change. To sum it up, the current CHOKE has decided to follow its own path and break new ground, without minding what others are doing. That feeling was packed into “Hack to the basic”.

At the same time, I have felt a strong connection to people who like CHOKE and have gotten in touch with the emotions from those persons while performing live. Now, there is also a connection with people from around the world who really like us. I wanted to deliver a positive message to those too. I would like B5 to explain his approach regarding the sound next.

Please let us know your thoughts.

B5: This time, for “Hack to the basic”, I brought into play a bass that I used to perform with frequently in the past. That bass model was the typical one used for many bassists when nu-metal was at its peak. Since the theme was about returning to nu-meal, I took that specific bass (which I hadn’t used for a long time). It was a good fit.

This single it’s not only about going “Back to the basic[s]”, but going “Back to CHOKE”.

You got “Back to CHOKE” through “Hack to the basic”. Are you going to continue to develop your most recent style?

KVYA NONO: The B-track of this digital single is “Stay high(retake)”, which is the re-recorded version of this song from our first album. We often play this song, so that led us to discuss if this type of nu-metal is the style that CHOKE should pursue. Recently, CHOKE has been emphasizing the complexity with an “in your face” attitude, but we have been asking ourselves if we should keep the approach taken in “Hack to the basic”. Or maybe we should go in a completely different direction… To be honest, we don’t have a clear idea yet, since it will depend on our mood at the moment. I hope people look forward to whatever we come out with.

If we talk about CHOKE, my impression is that you’re a band with an intricate musical style; but in fact, your basic style is nu-metal. Isn’t it?

KVYA NONO: That’s correct. Furthermore, I think people are more into minimalism than complexity lately. “Hack to the basic” is a track that can be played with the tuning for a 6-string guitar. Basically, I use the standard tuning but dropping some strings into two notes lower to give it a particular hook.

B5: This was all inspired by the drumming style of Toshiya Sato. His approach really shines on a song with a good rhythm.

Toshiya Sato: All the members know very well my particular drumming style. I’m that type that has greedily adopted various musical styles, not only extreme metal. My disposition is always to play in order to fit the taste of the song, even if it’s only an 8-beat rhythm. This time, in “Hack to the basic”, I aimed to infuse metal with a modern pop groove. I feel I was able to put heaviness and a cool groove together successfully.

KVYA NONO: This single it’s not only about going “Back to the basic[s]”, but going “Back to CHOKE”. Isn’t it?

B5: I think so. We have tried several things but, after reflecting on who we are, we got back to our basics… right?

We have lived breathing the air of nu-metal. Can’t we get wrapped in the atmosphere of those days and go on stage again and be even more aggressive?!

CHOKE has thrown out a riddle to the future in the trailer of “Hack to the basic”.

KVYA NONO: As I edited the video myself entirely, I grasped REON’s consciousness and presented it from my perspective on how to pose the problem. Depending on how you look at it, it may be interpreted in a negative way. But let me tell you something, CHOKE’s future looks bright and we will be planning many things for 2021.

REON: Throughout the year, I’ve seen bands breaking up or giving up on live activities due to the COVID-19 impact. It’s something that you can still see frequently. If you only keep feeling bad about it, things will remain the same. Instead of only seeing the glass half-empty, what about trying to make something positive out of this? Me, the other members, and CHOKE itself are pretty much the type that is driven to face any challenge. This band will never have a pessimistic attitude, regardless of the circumstances.

B5: That’s because we wanted to convey a positive message with “Hack to the basic” at the end of 2020, this way we will continue making headway in 2021 as CHOKE.

KVYA NONO: In 2021, we won’t slow down the release pace and we will be focusing on our basic activities while polishing our skills.

B5: We have lived breathing the air of nu-metal. Can’t we get wrapped in the atmosphere of those days and go on stage again and be even more aggressive?!

KVYA NONO: We showed our tricky side in our past two releases, but our essence comes from the nu-metal style. We returned to our origins and brought up a positive approach with “Hack to the basic”. Please experience it by yourself.

Toshiya Sato: “No problem at all”, “The Human Anthem”, and “Hack to the basic” are the three songs that will become CHOKE’s new basics, which the band is facing the future with. And, in particular, “Hack to the basic” is the one that will be a turning point in 2021 without a doubt.

REON: It will be like that the whole year. Since it seems that the self-isolation practice will continue, modern society will adopt this as their new basic way to live. But we can’t just sit there forever. We will break through and move on to the next stage (way of life). We have to return to our set of basics (Back to the basic) to find our real essence and build new basics. That’s the way how CHOKE is living now.

La banda CHOKE ha lanzado recientemente su single digital Hack to the basic. Con el mundo inmerso en miedo y pánico debido a la amenaza invisible del coronavirus; pero en este año, CHOKE no se centra en el virus COVID-19 en sí. La banda se burla de la sociedad histérica y expresa la importancia de evaluarnos a nosotros mismos, con el mismo enfoque cínico de sus pasados singles digitales No problem at all y The Human Anthem.

A diferencia de las composiciones alternativas y pesadas de “No problem at all” y “The Human Anthem”, cargadas de elementos complejos y letras difíciles de digerir; CHOKE se sumerge al nu-metal con “Hack to the basic” y declara a través de la actitud positiva dentro de la letra y melodía que seguirán abriéndose camino sin importar las circunstancias. Esperamos que esta entrevista ayude a otros a entender lo que CHOKE quiere transmitir. 

En lugar de señalar un problema como en nuestros dos últimos lanzamientos, estaba entusiasmado por hacer una canción más optimista y divertida.

CHOKE ha declarado por medio de “Hack to the basic” que los recintos musicales son su espacio vital. ¿No es así?

REON: Como banda, todo gira en torno a las presentaciones en vivo. En estos momentos, cada recinto aplica sus propias medidas sanitarias, tales como “solo se puede levantar la voz si se usa cubrebocas” o “hacer moshing está prohibido”. No se puede tener el mismo ambiente, así que también es difícil para el público divertirse como antes. En este caso, CHOKE ha tomado la iniciativa de mostrar una nueva forma de disfrutar los conciertos. Ese sentimiento se inyectó a “Hack to the basic” y espero que todos ustedes puedan sentirlo también. Simultáneamente, es una muestra de nuestra determinación de seguir adelante. La música tiene una vibra animada, creo que eso sirve como punto de interés.

En comparación con los singles digitales No problem at all y The Human Anthem, ciertamente este nuevo single es mucho más pegadizo.

REON: “Hack to the basic” es una canción con una onda fresca. En lugar de señalar un problema como en nuestros dos últimos lanzamientos, estaba entusiasmado por hacer una canción más optimista y divertida.

¿Esta canción se hizo con la intención de tener un “buen gancho” en mente?

KVYA NONO: En nuestros comienzos, seguido se referían a CHOKE como una “banda que revive el nu-metal”. Desde el año pasado, hemos actuado constantemente junto a bandas de la escena metalcore y agrupaciones pesadas de visual kei. Nos dimos cuenta de que hay muchas bandas de metalcore que son increíbles. Eso nos hizo reflexionar sobre la dirección que debíamos seguir y el tipo de música que debíamos tocar. Hablamos de “volver a nuestras raíces de nu-metal”, y fue así que se hizo este trabajo con tal intención. De hecho, la idea de hacer una canción con sabor a nu-metal siempre ha estado en el aire, pero no encontrábamos el momento adecuado para lanzarla. Pero por fin pudimos hacerlo. Además, nuestro baterista de apoyo, Toshiya Sato, tiene un estilo que enfatiza el buen ritmo. Eso me inspiró en gran medida para tomar el impulso de volver a nuestros orígenes nu-metal.

Toshiya Sato: Cuando recibí el demo, KVYA NONO me dijo que quería hacer esta canción muy atractiva y pegadiza. Así que intenté mezclar mi propio ritmo con el mundo de CHOKE, sin dejar de lado el rap de REON y el ritmo del equipo de cuerdas.

B5: Formamos esta banda porque todos los miembros compartíamos las mismas influencias musicales y apuntábamos en la misma dirección respecto al tipo de música que queríamos hacer. Como resultado de volver a ese punto y enfocarlo de una nueva manera, “Hack to the basic” es el sonido evolucionado del estilo que hemos llevado consigo desde nuestros inicios.

“Hack to the basic” nació del rastro del movimiento nu-metal, popular a principios de la década de los 2000, fusionado con elementos del hip hop de la vieja escuela y una mezcla de atmósfera con estilo japonés.

Cuando escuché “Hack to the basic”, me dio la sensación de “mezcla” que se suele emplear en la escena japonesa.  Se puede sentir el aura de aquellos días en la canción.

B5: “Hack to the basic” nació del rastro del movimiento nu-metal, popular a principios de la década de los 2000, fusionado con elementos del hip hop de la vieja escuela y una mezcla de atmósfera con estilo japonés. Hemos vivido inmersos en ese aire. Pensamos que sería estupendo mostrar una banda que transmitiera el ambiente de aquellos años, pero con un estilo fresco. Creamos “Hack to the basic” con esa mentalidad y creo que la canción definitivamente lo logra. 

Parece que CHOKE despierta esa nostalgia, pero sin llegar a ser totalmente retro.

B5: Añadimos scratching y trajimos de vuelta otros toques característicos pero, a la par, proyecta un ritmo moderno. Pero, sobre todo, el tema más importante en “Hack to the basic” es divertirse.

KVYA NONO: En mi interpretación del nu-metal, el punto clave es la implementación del sampling junto con un toque de hip hop. Este lanzamiento se centró en esos elementos; por esta razón, el lado B, “Stay high (retake)”, es una canción que presenta scratching y samples de una voz femenina. Asimismo, fui muy consciente de darle un estado de ánimo no tan explosivo en contraste con la energía del slam de los años 2000 y el flujo “hey” característico del hip hop clásico. “Hack to the basic” es una canción con ritmo atresillado; sin embargo, no tiene la sensación de tener una cadencia animada porque intenté eliminar todo el swing en la medida de lo posible. En particular, creo que la guitarra transmite una vibra underground.

CHOKE no es el tipo de banda que hace música para fiestas bulliciosas, ¿verdad?

KVYA NONO: No. Es decir, no puedo ver a REON gritando “¡Oh, yeah!” en un concierto. ¿Tú sí? Es verdad que la canción tiene un fuerte sabor a hip hop y lleva una buena onda que se asemeja a un estilo de fiesta, pero el coro tiene influencia del carácter despreocupado del city pop, así como los acordes maduros de este. CHOKE es el tipo de banda que puede convertir esto en algo no festivo. Lo hice deliberadamente.

REON: Nuestras vidas están a merced de la crisis del coronavirus desde el año pasado. Todavía no hemos encontrado una solución, por lo que seguimos en caos. De esa manera me sentí al principio de la pasada primavera, cuando alrededor de mayo o junio la gente en el poder dio las directrices sobre cómo debíamos proceder. La realidad es que no nos mostraron nada. O tal vez lo hicieron, pero eso no resonó conmigo en absoluto y no pude divisar nada hacia el futuro. Pensé “si tenemos que esperar a que alguien nos guíe, nos quedaremos atascados”. “No problem at all” y “The Human Anthem” nacieron de esa ansiedad y descontento. Quería alentar a las personas a elegir su propio camino y seguir adelante a través de estas canciones. Podría haber expresado mi descontento una vez más, pero quería ir en una dirección más positiva. Por eso incluí un mensaje optimista en la canción.

Respecto al sonido, como ya han lo han mencionado los otros miembros, el nu-metal es la base de mi propio estilo musical. La composición en sí se hizo con el propósito de “volver a lo básico” y la letra también expresa la misma idea. Sin embargo, no tenía un buen giro, así que cambié la primera letra para convertirla en “Hack to the basic”. De este modo, adquiere el significado de “cortar” o “hackear”. En otras palabras, significa “demoler el conjunto actual de lo básico”. De ese fundamento nació la letra final.

Con “demoler el conjunto actual de lo básico”, ¿te refieres a “cambiar nuestra situación actual y el mundo”?

REON: Si este modo de confinamiento continúa, nos acostumbraremos a él y este estilo de vida se convertirá en la norma. Y a juzgar por cómo van las cosas hoy en día, esta situación seguirá así. En lugar de hacer ajustes, así tengamos que empezar desde cero, debemos crear una nueva forma de vivir. De lo contrario, la situación en la que nos encontramos nosotros y nuestros allegados no cambiará. En pocas palabras, el CHOKE actual ha decidido seguir su propio camino y abrirse paso, sin importarle lo que hagan los demás. Ese sentimiento se plasmó en “Hack to the basic”.

Al mismo tiempo, he sentido una fuerte conexión con la gente a la que le gusta CHOKE y he entrado en contacto con las emociones de esas personas al actuar en vivo. B5: En esta ocasión, para “Hack to the basic”, use un bajo con el cual solía tocar frecuentemente en el pasado. Ese modelo de bajo era el típico que utilizaban muchos bajistas cuando el nu-metal estaba en su apogeo. Como el tema se centraba en volver al nu-metal, saqué ese bajo en específico (el cual no había usado en mucho tiempo). Realmente fue la mejor opción.

No solo es “regresar a lo básico” con este sencillo, sino “regresar a CHOKE”.

Has “regresado a CHOKE” a través de “Hack to the basic”. ¿Seguirás experimentando con tu estilo más reciente?

KVYA NONO: El lado B de este single digital es “Stay high(retake)”, que es la versión regrabada de este tema de nuestro primer álbum. A menudo tocamos esta canción, lo que nos llevó a discutir si este tipo de nu-metal es el estilo que CHOKE debería seguir. Recientemente, CHOKE ha estado enfatizando la complejidad con una actitud retadora, pero nos hemos estado preguntando si deberíamos mantener el enfoque adoptado en “Hack to the basic”. KVYA NONO: Es correcto. Además, creo que últimamente la gente busca más el minimalismo que la complejidad. “Hack to the basic” es un tema que se puede tocar con la afinación para una guitarra de 6 cuerdas. Básicamente, utilizo la afinación estándar pero bajando algunas cuerdas dos notas para darle un gancho particular.

B5: Todo esto fue inspirado en el estilo de batería de Toshiya Sato. Su enfoque realmente sobresale en una canción con buen ritmo.

Toshiya Sato: Todos los miembros conocen muy bien mi particular estilo de tocar la batería. Soy de los que han adoptado ávidamente diferentes estilos musicales, no solo metal extremo. Mi disposición siempre es la de tocar adaptándome al carácter de la canción, así sea un ritmo de 8 tiempos. Esta vez, en “Hack to the basic”, me propuse fusionar metal con un groove de pop moderno. Creo que fui capaz de reunir exitosamente un sonido pesado con un ritmo fresco.

KVYA NONO: No solo es “regresar a lo básico” con este sencillo, sino “regresar a CHOKE”. ¿Cierto?

B5: Supongo. Hemos probado varias cosas pero, tras reflexionar sobre lo que somos, volvimos a lo que es básico para nosotros… ¿no?

Hemos vivido respirando el aire del nu-metal. ¿No podemos envolvernos en la atmósfera de aquellos días, volver a subir al escenario y ser aún más agresivos?

CHOKE ha lanzado un acertijo hacia el futuro en el tráiler de “Hack to the basic”.

KVYA NONO: Como el vídeo lo edité yo mismo en su totalidad, capté la mentalidad de REON y lo he presentado desde mi perspectiva de cómo plantear el problema. Dependiendo de cómo se mire, puede que se interprete de forma negativa. Pero déjenme decirles algo, el futuro de CHOKE se ve brillante y estaremos planeando muchas cosas para el 2021.

REON: A lo largo del año, he visto bandas desintegrarse o abandonar las actividades en vivo debido al impacto del COVID-19. Es algo que todavía se ve con frecuencia. Si te la pasas lamentándote, las cosas seguirán igual. En lugar de ver solo el vaso medio vacío, ¿qué tal si intentamos sacar algo de provecho de esto? Tanto yo como los demás miembros y el propio CHOKE somos de los que están dispuestos a afrontar cualquier reto. Esta banda nunca tendrá una actitud pesimista, sin importar las circunstancias.

B5: Es por ello que quisimos transmitir un mensaje positivo con “Hack to the basic” a finales de 2020, y de esta manera seguir avanzando en 2021 como CHOKE.

KVYA NONO: En 2021, no frenaremos el ritmo de lanzamientos y nos centraremos en nuestras actividades básicas mientras mejoramos nuestras habilidades.

B5: Hemos vivido respirando el aire del nu-metal. ¿No podemos envolvernos en la atmósfera de aquellos días, volver a subir al escenario y ser aún más agresivos?

KVYA NONO: Mostramos nuestra faceta compleja en los dos últimos lanzamientos, pero nuestra esencia proviene del estilo nu-metal. Volvimos a nuestros orígenes y le dimos un enfoque positivo con “Hack to the basic”. Por favor, experiméntenlo por ustedes mismos.

Nu-metal band CHOKE have released their new digital single Hack to the basic on January 15, 2021. While their last single The Human Anthem was an exhilarating ride that featured an aggressive sound with a metalcore approach, CHOKE are back to their nu-metal roots and evoke a groovy and exciting mood with the song “Hack to the basic”.

Although CHOKE are more known for intricated compositions with frenetic disjointed rhythms, the band decided to turn back to the basics and embrace the music that has most influenced the members: the nu-metal from the late ‘90s and early 2000s. It’s not only a glance to the past but a manifesto to fueling the scene again.

“Hack to the basic” is filled with bouncing beats that invite the listener to enjoy the groove. A style that completely set this song apart from others in CHOKE’s discography. The track starts with an uncanny intro that flows into a chorus with fry screams. The tune then transitions into verses with a cool vibe and catchy rap flows that features turntable scratches and loud resonations from the bass. In addition to the change of rhythm, another major difference is the simpler guitar style:  it has not the typical meticulous riffs that CHOKE usually deliver; but that’s definitively not a bummer, this time is all about the chill!

The singles No problem at all and The Human Anthem, released in 2020, addressed the dangers of mob mentality and the pressure of living up to the expectations of society. Once more, CHOKE instigate the listeners to leave the fear behind and to live by their own standards. This new single starts with the simple premise of enjoying music, but it’s a call to take control of the future as well. A positive message in these disheartening times that encourages to adapt to the circumstances (create a new set of basics) and move forward.

La banda de nu-metal CHOKE lanzó su nuevo sencillo digital Hack to the basic el 15 de enero de 2021. CHOKE’s first digital single “No problem at all”, released in June, crossed national borders to earn enthusiastic support from fans of loud and heavy metal music around the world. With its constantly changing composition, unpredictable and incomparable to anything else, and timely lyrics that depict the hopeless feelings inspired by the coronavirus crisis in a sarcastic fashion, this song resonated with many people who are resentful of what has happened to their everyday lives. It has earned high regard both at home in Japan and abroad. For CHOKE, a band that ridicules modern Japanese society, this might be seen as a happy sort of irony. If anyone sees it any other way, the nature of Japanese people to fear and avoid any unexpected or unpredictable threat may be too deeply rooted in you, and you may need a bit of time to get used to a new standard.

CHOKE’s second digital single, “The Human Anthem”, was released on September 11th. It is now available for purchase in downloadable format at the CHOKE Official Shop along with its companion track, “Amyotrophic”. We sat down to talk with CHOKE about this latest release.

Seeing those stories in the news while knowing that context behind them makes me think,
‘What is justice, exactly?’

It hasn’t been very long since the release of your first digital single, “No problem at all,” and now you’re releasing your second one, “The Human Anthem”.

KYVA NONO: We had agreed that we wanted to step up our pace for releasing songs this year, and then coronavirus happened on top of that, which meant we were able to release these two singles just three months apart.

Does “The Human Anthem” follow the same themes used in “No problem at all”?

KYVA NONO: It does have the same sort of symphonic arrangement as “No problem at all”. But late last year, we were thinking about how to come up with CHOKE’s own style of catchiness, and that thought process was reflected in “The Human Anthem”.

REON: What’s most unique about “The Human Anthem” is the chorus part in the first half. It doesn’t have lyrics or anything, it’s just a line of “whoa, whoa, whoa” that you can sing along to. We made it sound like a choir while giving it the feel of a catchy song, which was a new approach that added a lot of impact. I think it’s one of the biggest steps in the evolution/growth of CHOKE to date.

That part does carry a lot of impact, doesn’t it?

REON: Layering many voices together is very meaningful. For example, at demonstrations and protests, many people come together for a common cause and deliver the same message via all of their voices. Assembling a lot of people and speaking in one collective voice is a behavior unique to humans, and a chorus is the same thing in the sense that it’s something where many people sing the same thing with a common goal. In fact, I was thinking that I wanted to create this song’s composition in a way that would affirm some unique characteristics of humans when the words “human anthem” came to mind, and I decided to make that concept the focal point of this song’s message, which led to the sing-along chorus I mentioned earlier.

So the concept of a “human anthem” is the theme of the lyrics?

REON: Even something as small as an ant will occasionally confront a much bigger opponent like a human, even if it stands no chance against it alone. I wondered if you could actually call that courage. Someone else also said that true courage is knowing your own weakness, not being reckless. All people have their own ideas of justice, their own wills and thoughts. But there are times when the world looks at those ways of thinking and calls them “bad”. No matter what people do that ends up labeled as bad behavior, it’s not as if they went into it thinking “hey, let’s do something bad”. They’re just pursuing a shared benefit or goal, and it results in society labeling their actions as “bad”. Basically, the people carrying out these actions are doing so under the common banner of what they consider to be justice. Of course, just as society might deem those actions “bad,” there will be others who judge their actions based on different criteria. Before even considering the basis for what’s good or bad, if it’s just having that kind of conviction that makes humans what they are, then I want to praise every human who possesses a will and thoughts like that.

That’s getting into the roots of human psychology.

REON: Buried in all the sensationalist news we see nowadays, there are also a lot of stories about people who committed really heinous crimes and terrible murders. And among murderers, there are some who were taking care of someone but just couldn’t deal with it anymore, so they killed the person they were taking care of. Of course, that’s a crime just the same, but there are quite a few cases where someone’s been caring for a parent who isn’t even aware of who they are anymore, so all the time and effort they dedicate to that parent causes such mental anguish and strain on their lifestyle that they decide to just end it. These people have their own selfish ideas of what justice is when it comes to caregiving, but there have also been murderers who went around indiscriminately killing people in nursing homes. There was also a case recently where someone was diagnosed with ALS, and they decided that if it came down to watching their own body deteriorate until they had to be constantly looked after, they’d rather take their own life. But the person’s body was already no longer capable of that, so they asked their caregiver to do it as a favor. Seeing those stories in the news while knowing that context behind them makes me think, “What is justice, exactly?” I wanted to write this song’s lyrics with a solid focus on delving deep into the psychology of people like that. Things like that happen because, for better or worse, they’re human. With “The Human Anthem,” I wanted to praise humans for what they are, including their weakness. And it was CHOKE’s characteristic cynicism that led to the title “The Human Anthem” instead of something like “Human Glorification”.*

*The Japanese title is “人間惨歌 (Ningen sanka)”, but CHOKE is making a pun with the reading of the kanjis to convey irony. The word “sanka” means “anthem”; however they exchanged one of the characters to make it sound the same, but actually giving it the meaning of “tragic/miserable song”.

“The Human Anthem” does express various psychological conflicts, but in the end, it also shines light on the future. Is that how you were hoping to guide the listener, REON?

REON: Joan of Arc led many soldiers under a great banner and took the lead in facing the enemy. Part of me does admire that, but I wanted to lean closer to the side of the soldiers, and the sound of many soldiers raising their voices together. Each individual is small on their own, but I wanted to focus on the voices of a large group of people shouting out their feelings with one great, collective will. Basically, if everyone can just raise their voice, anyone can clear a path to the future by declaring their own will and holding it high.

B5: People can often come to understand each other by deepening their communication, and they can get closer to each other that way. That’s just what you call communication between humans. But there are some things about other people that you might never understand. Our point is that it’s not right to reject those things just because you don’t understand them. It’s important to recognize that the things you don’t understand are not automatically “bad,” but to accept that people and ideas like that also exist and to start having discussions about them.

I feel like CHOKE’s unique style has reached a new stage of completion through ‘The Human Anthem’

What sort of image did you have in mind when you composed “The Human Anthem”?

KYVA NONO: The first verse uses diminished chords to create some heavy dissonance. On top of that, it starts out as the fastest two-beat composition CHOKE has ever made, then goes into some symphonic elements with choir-style vocals that give it CHOKE’s own form of catchiness, which gave it CHOKE’s unique flavor in the very non-standard way that I was going for. Creating something that would be catchy even without any melody or lyrics while constantly changing from one music style to the next is another trait that makes it very clearly a CHOKE song. As a result, I feel like CHOKE’s unique style has reached a new stage of completion through “The Human Anthem”

As you mentioned, “The Human Anthem” is definitely a speedy song.

KYVA NONO: It’s a pretty eccentric level of speed. And inserting a lot of break points throughout the composition is something that feels normal to us, but isn’t something you hear a lot in most music. Also, I included some of B5 and Toshiya Sato’s ideas this time, and they both did their best to express their performance in a way that matched the progression of the composition.

Toshiya Sato: The chaotic two-beat rhythm at the beginning is a metalcore approach that’s come about in recent years. Once the high-speed two-beat part stops, REON’s rap part comes in, and the instruments keep the beat. From there, I played the drums in a way that would bring out the best expression in each block of the song, like layering some cymbals to give a more solid feel, etc. I believe having different idiosyncrasies is what makes “The Human Anthem” what it is, as well as what makes CHOKE what it is. I’m just here as a support member myself, but I want to be able to keep playing together with the same amount of enthusiasm. When we wrote and released “No problem at all,” we were doing all we could to get closer to the worldview that CHOKE had worked to build up to that point, and that made it possible for us to convey our message with “The Human Anthem” and give it the new color of the current CHOKE. I think it’s a great thing that we were able to incorporate a new essence into CHOKE as a result.

B5: Toshiya Sato and I did want to add our own essences to the song too, after all. KYVA NONO did a great job of absorbing all of that and putting it together.

So you were also trying to see how much catchiness you could give to “The Human Anthem”?

KYVA NONO: That was the challenge I gave myself. With CHOKE, I don’t want to fall back on the standard practice of throwing in some empty lyrics and calling it catchy. There aren’t many songs out there with no established melody that are still regarded as catchy songs. In CHOKE, we’ve always been thinking constantly about ways to make a song catchy, and one of the things we thought of was putting emphasis on the combination of choral-sounding vocals with symphonic elements, as in “The Human Anthem”. We used some symphonic elements in “No problem at all” too, and it’s the sort of thing that can become CHOKE’s distinctive color depending on how it’s used, so we tried the same thing again with this song.

The music video for “The Human Anthem” is set in an abandoned hospital. That creates a pretty strong impact, doesn’t it?

KYVA NONO: The impact that REON had in the “No problem at all” music video had a really intense effect on the people who watched it, so right from the start, we were aiming to make this one even more intense. Since the theme of the lyrics is the psychological side of humans, we shot this video in an abandoned hospital that used to care for mental patients. The grotesque look was a product of all of our members’ musical roots. Also, we wanted to deliver this song’s impact through its music video first.

All of the members look pretty grotesque in the music video for “The Human Anthem”. Some of you were even eating bugs and raw meat in it.

Toshiya Sato: Those shots were pretty wild to film.

REON: “No problem at all” was set in an abandoned village, and “The Human Anthem” was set in an abandoned hospital. I think we really put our lives on the line for both of them.

KYVA NONO: Since we film and edit our music videos ourselves, we came up with the plot first, but the other members suggested some more ideas as we were filming, so we worked those in along the way. That made it a really exciting shoot and gave us more complete footage.

People might think that you all look pretty dangerous, judging only by what they watched on this footage. You’re all actually very mild-mannered, though.

REON: The most dangerous people aren’t the ones with eccentric behavior and appearances, but the ones who blend seamlessly into our daily lives. When people like that get just one misunderstanding in their heads, they become truly dangerous. In our case, we’re just converting that into our concerts and music videos.

You tend to portray a character who would be perceived as a threat in your concerts and music videos, REON.

REON: Most of the time, I’m totally normal. I guess that’s why I’m so drawn to the concept of being a dangerous person, and why I portray one in my performances.

KYVA NONO: This song makes use of Toshiya Sato’s blast beat skills to give it his unique flavor, which I turned into a downer-type rapcore composition.

The lyrics to “The Human Anthem” and “Amyotrophic” share a common theme at the most basic level, don’t they?

REON: First of all, everyone should look up the meaning of “Amyotrophic” Once you understand the term, I think you’ll start to see how it links up to the concepts I mentioned earlier. Both “The Human Anthem” and “Amyotrophic” express hopelessness, but “The Human Anthem” still carries ultimately positive messages like “no matter what you’re feeling, you just need to do what it takes with no regrets” and “try raising your own voice more,” while “Amyotrophic” is just pure despair and hopelessness. It’s not necessary to force hope into everything. But the people who’ve been watching CHOKE all this time understand that this band is still facing forward while stirring up agitation in our own way, and that’s enough.

It’s true that in CHOKE’s case, the true essence of your work that doesn’t always come across clearly from just music videos and compositions is easier to understand once you read the lyrics.

REON: Yeah, though that’s pretty twisted in itself (lol)

B5: Human emotions are prone to violent swings; they’re grotesque and chaotic. In both its composition and its lyrics, “The Human Anthem” is linked to that portrayal of the human mind. That’s not a mistaken interpretation, since we want to glorify the individual values that make us all human. But we do want to keep that separate from people who commit horrific crimes and cause tragic disasters in the eyes of the law. I think if people can really understand those deeper nuances, they can enjoy CHOKE’s worldview even more.

REON: The current circumstances still prevent us from playing concerts like we normally would, and that just makes me even more eager to perform these songs live for everyone as soon as possible.

CHOKE is an emerging nu-metal/visual kei band from Japan. They started with the overall goal of creating a unique sound by mixing rap metal with djent. Their experimental music, nevertheless, does not stick to only one genre and has evolved since their formation in 2017. CHOKE have incorporated into their sound hard-core, trap-core, metalcore, thrash and groove metal influences while adding electronic, symphonic, or progressive elements into the mix. CHOKE offers a peculiar dissonant blend of heavy music with hip hop rhythm.

Their cranked-up songs feature dropped tuning instruments, intense breakdowns, distorted riffs with fast guitar licks, heavy vibrating bass lines along with thick punchy drum beats. The dynamic vocals combine clear rapping with growls and piercing screams. Harsh and edgy lyrics regularly express social criticism and dogma rejection. Ésta ha ganado un gran reconocimiento tanto en su nativo Japón como fuera del país. Para CHOKE, una banda que ridiculiza a la sociedad japonesa actual, esto puede verse como una feliz ironía. Visto desde otra perspectiva, la naturaleza de los japoneses a temer y evitar cualquier amenaza inesperada o impredecible puede que esté ya demasiada arraigada, así que tal vez se necesite algo de tiempo para adoptar un nuevo estándar.  

El 11 de septiembre fue lanzado “The Human Anthem”, el segundo sencillo digital por parte de CHOKE. Éste se encuentra disponible para su compra en formato descargable en la tienda oficial de CHOKE, el cual incluye el tema extra “Amyotrophic”. Nos hemos sentado con CHOKE para platicar de este nuevo trabajo.

Al ver esas historias en las noticias, tras conocer el contexto de éstas, me hace pesar ¿qué es exactamente la justicia?

No ha pasado mucho desde que se lanzó su primer sencillo digital “No problema at all”, y ahora se encuentran presentando el segundo “The Human Anthem”.

KVYA NONO: Acordamos que para este año aceleraríamos nuestro ritmo para lanzar canciones y, teniendo encima la situación del coronavirus, nos fue posible sacar estos dos sencillos con tan solo tres meses de diferencia.

¿“The Human Anthem” sigue la misma temática de “No problema at all”?

KYVA NONO: Si bien incorpora un tipo de arreglo sinfónico similar al usado en “No problem at all”; lo cierto es que, desde la última mitad del año pasado, ya habíamos estado pensado en cómo lograr un estilo pegadizo que sea muy particular de CHOKE. Esa idea se vio plasmada en “The Human Anthem”.

REON: El aspecto más único en “The Human Anthem” es la parte del coro en la primera mitad. No tiene ninguna frase o algo similar, es solo una línea de “guau, guau, guau” que se puede cantar a la par. Hicimos que sonara como un coro y, a la vez, eso le dio un toque pegadizo, lo cual fue un nuevo recurso que le añadió un gran impacto. Creo que es uno de los pasos más grande en la evolución/crecimiento de CHOKE hasta la fecha.

Esa parte impresiona mucho, ¿cierto?

REON: Muchas voces al unísono es algo muy significativo. Por ejemplo, multitudes se reúnen por una causa común y expresan un mismo mensaje con sus voces en las concentraciones y protestas. Reunirse entre varios y hablar con una voz colectiva es un comportamiento único de los humanos. Así que un coro es lo mismo en el sentido de que es algo en el que una multitud canta lo mismo con un objetivo en común. De hecho, mi idea era crear la composición de esta canción de una forma que ratificara algunas de las características únicas de los humanos, de esta manera llegaron a mi mente las palabras “himno humano”. Es así que decidí que ese concepto fuera el punto a enfatizar del mensaje de esta canción, lo nos lleva al coro en conjunto que mencione antes.

¿Así que el concepto de un “himno humano” es el tema de la letra?

REON: Incluso algo tan pequeño como una hormiga ocasionalmente puede hacerle frente a un oponente mucho más grande como un humano, aún si no tiene ninguna oportunidad contra éste por si solo. Me pregunte si realmente se le puede llamar a eso valentía. Alguien más mencionó que la verdadera valentía no radicaba en actuar de manera temeraria, sino en conocer tus debilidades. Todos tenemos nuestra propia noción de justicia, voluntad y manera de pensar. Pero en algunas ocasiones, cuando el mundo presta atención a ese tipo de pensamiento, lo llama “malvado”. No importa lo que la gente haga, al final es etiquetado como un mal comportamiento, pero no es como si ellos fueran por la vida pensando “oye, hagamos algo malo”. Solo están tratando de conseguir un beneficio en común o una meta y la sociedad termina denominando sus acciones como “malas”. Básicamente, la gente que lleva a cabo estas acciones lo hace bajo el estandarte de lo que ellos consideran justicia. Claro, la sociedad puede considerar sus actos como “malos”, pero también habrá otros que juzgaran sus acciones basados en otros criterios. Sin tener que considerar las bases de lo que es bueno o malo, si tener ese tipo de convicción es lo que hace a los humanos lo que son, entonces quiero elogiar a todos aquellos que poseen una voluntad y manera de pensar como esa.

Eso es adentrarse a las profundidades de la psicología humana.

REON: Aunque opacadas por todas las noticias sensacionalistas que vemos recientemente, también hay muchas historias acerca de personas que han cometido crímenes atroces y asesinatos terribles. Dentro de estos asesinos, existen algunos que han estado cuidado de alguien pero que ya no pueden seguir con esa situación, por lo que terminan matando a la persona a su cuidado. No hay duda que igual es un crimen, pero también hay bastantes casos donde se está cuidando a un padre que ya ni siquiera es consciente de sí mismo, así que todo el tiempo y esfuerzo que dedican a cuidarlo causa mucha angustia mental y afecta de manera importante su estilo de vida, por lo que deciden simplemente ponerle un fin. Estas personas tienen sus propias ideas egoístas de lo que es la justicia cuando se refiere a dar cuidados, pero también hay asesinos que fueron a asilos de ancianos simplemente a matar indiscriminadamente. También hubo un caso hace poco donde alguien que fue diagnosticado con ELA (Esclerosis Lateral Amiotrófica) decidió que, si ya veía su cuerpo deteriorado a tal punto que requiriera cuidados constantes, entonces se quitaría la vida. Sin embargo, su cuerpo ya no fue capaz de realizar esta acción, por lo que le pidió a su cuidador que lo matara como un favor. Al ver esas historias en las noticias, tras conocer el contexto de éstas, me hace pesar “¿qué es exactamente la justicia?”. Quise escribir la letra de esta canción enfocándome en profundizar en la psicología de gente como esa. Cosas así suceden porque, para bien o para mal, son humanos. Con “The Human Anthem”, quise darles reconocimiento a los humanos por lo que son, incluyendo sus debilidades. Y el cinismo tan característico de CHOKE fue lo que llevó a tener el título de “el himno humano” y no algo como “glorificación humana”.*

*CHOKE está haciendo un juego de palabras con la lectura de los kanjis. El título japonés es “Ningen sanka” (himno humano). La palabra “sanka” significa “himno”, pero han intercambiado un carácter para que mantenga la misma lectura, pero dándole el significado de “canción trágica/miserable”.

B5: La gente usualmente se entiende con otros a través de la comunicación y pueden acercarse entre sí de esta manera. A eso le llamamos comunicación entre humanos. Pero hay aspectos de otras personas que tal vez nunca logres comprender. Nuestro punto es que no es correcto rechazarlos solo porque no los entiendes. Es importante reconocer que las cosas que no entiendes no son automáticamente “malas”, sino aceptar que también existen personas e ideas diferentes y es mejor estar abiertos al debate. 

Siento que el estilo único de CHOKE ha alcanzado una nueva etapa de crecimiento con “The Human Anthem”

¿Qué imagen tenías en mente cuando compusiste “The Human Anthem”?

KVYA NONO: El primer coro emplea acordes disminuidos para crear una disonancia pesada. Además, inicia con el ritmo de dos golpes más rápido que ha hecho CHOKE y le siguen algunos elementos sinfónicos con voces tipo coro, lo que da un toque atractivo muy particular de CHOKE. Eso le otorgó nuestro sabor único de una manera no convencional, que era lo que estaba buscando. Crear algo que sea pegadizo, incluso sin melodía o letra, mientras sea cambia de un estilo musical a otro es uno de los rasgos que más se distingue a una canción de CHOKE. En consecuencia, siento que el estilo único de CHOKE ha alcanzado una nueva etapa de crecimiento con “The Human Anthem”.

Tal como lo mencionaste, “The Human Anthem” es una canción rápida.

KVYA NONO: Es un nivel de velocidad muy exagerado. Insertar muchos puntos de quiebre a lo largo de la composición es algo que ya es normal para nosotros, aunque esto no es algo común en la música popular. Adicionalmente, incluí algunas ideas de B5 y Toshiya Sato en esta ocasión; ambos realmente se esforzaron en llevar a cabo su interpretación de una manera que estuviera acorde con la progresión de la composición.

Toshiya Sato:  El ritmo caótico de dos beats al inicio es un enfoque propio del metalcore que ha surgido en los últimos años. Una vez que se detiene la parte de los golpes dobles de alta velocidad, entra la parte del rap de REON y entonces los instrumentos continúan con el ritmo. A partir de ese punto, toqué la batería de modo que resaltara de la mejor manera la expresión de cada bloque; por ejemplo, al intercalar algunos platillos para darle una sensación más sólida, etc. Creo que tener diferentes idiosincrasias es lo que hace a “The Human Anthem” lo que es y, de la misma manera, lo que hace a CHOKE. Mi posición aquí es la de músico de soporte, pero me gustaría poder seguir tocando con el mismo entusiasmo de ellos. Cuando hicimos y lanzamos “No problem at all”, hicimos todo lo que pudimos para poder acercarnos a la cosmovisión que CHOKE había construido hasta ese momento; eso nos permitió poder entregar nuestro mensaje con “The Human Anthem” y darle ese nuevo color al CHOKE actual. Pienso que fue genial que el resultado haya sido la incorporación de una nueva esencia a la banda.

B5: Toshiya Sato y yo quisimos agregar nuestra propia esencia a la canción también. KVYA NONO hizo un gran trabajo al absorber todo esto y poder integrarlo.

¿Así que también intentaste ver que tanto atractivo se le podía dar a “The Human Anthem”?

KVYA NONO: Ese fue el desafío que me di a mí mismo. Con CHOKE, no quiero caer en la práctica común de poner alguna letra sin significado y llamar a eso pegadizo. No hay muchas canciones que, sin tener una melodía establecida, se consideren así. En CHOKE, siempre hemos pensado en como conseguir que una canción sea atractiva; pensamos que una forma de lograrlo sería poniendo énfasis en la combinación de un coro con elementos sinfónicos, tal como fue hecho en “The Human Anthem”. Utilizamos algunos elementos sinfónicos en “No problema at all” también. Dependiendo de cómo los usemos, se han convertido en uno de los atributos distintivos de CHOKE; por lo que intentamos hacer lo mismo de nuevo con esta canción.

Las personas más peligrosas no son aquellas con un comportamiento o apariencia excéntrica, sino aquellas que pasan desapercibidas en nuestra vida diaria

El video de “The Human Anthem” fue grabado en un hospital abandonado. Eso deja una fuerte impresión, ¿cierto?

KVYA NONO: El impacto que REON tuvo en el video de “No problem at all” fue muy fuerte para los espectadores, así que desde el inicio tuvimos la intención de hacer este video aún más intenso que el anterior. Dado a que el tema de letra se centra en la psicología humana, hicimos la grabación de este video en un hospital abandonado en donde se solían cuidar pacientes con enfermedades mentales. El toque grotesco fue producto de las influencias musicales de todos nosotros. Asimismo, quisimos transmitir el impacto de esta canción primeramente a través de su video.  

Todos los miembros lucen grotescos en el video musical de “The Human Anthem”. Algunos de ustedes hasta comen insectos y carne cruda.

Toshiya Sato: Esas tomas fueron muy difíciles de grabar.

REON: La locación de “No problema at all” tuvo lugar en una aldea abandonada y el de “The Human Anthem” fue grabado en un hospital abandonado. Creo que realmente arriesgamos nuestras vidas en ambos.

KVYA NONO: Puesto que nosotros grabamos y editamos nuestros videos, primero ideamos la historia. Pero los otros miembros dieron más ideas al momento de grabar, de modo que también las integramos en el camino.  Eso hizo que el metraje resultara muy interesante y nos dio un material más completo.

Para alguien que se tope con su video, ustedes pudieran parecer peligrosos. Aunque en realidad son personas muy tranquilas.

REON: Las personas más peligrosas no son aquellas con un comportamiento o apariencia excéntrica, sino aquellas que pasan desapercibidas en nuestra vida diaria. Cuando personas así tiene algún malentendido, se vuelven realmente peligrosas. En nuestro caso, nosotros solo estamos convirtiendo eso en conciertos y videos musicales.

REON, en tus conciertos y videos, a menudo sueles interpretar un personaje que puede ser visto como una amenaza.

REON: La mayor parte del tiempo soy una persona completamente común y corriente. Supongo que por eso me siento atraído al concepto de ser una persona peligrosa y por esa razón es que interpreto a alguien así en mis presentaciones.

Las emociones humanas son propensas a experimentar cambios violentos; son grotescas y caóticas. Tanto en la composición como en la letra, “The Human Anthem” está vinculado a esta representación de la mente humana

“The Human Anthem” está a la venta en formato descargable en la tienda en línea de CHOKE y va acompañado de una canción adicional “Amyotrophic”, que es más bien un tema depresivo.

KVYA NONO: Esta canción aprovecha las habilidades de Toshiya Sato para los blast beats, por lo que le impregna su toque único. Como resultado dio una canción desalentadora de estilo rapcore.

Parece que las letras de “The Human Anthem” y “Amyotrophic” en el fondo conllevan un tema en común.

REON: Primero que nada, deberían de buscar el significado de la palabra “Amyotrophic”. Una vez que conozcan el término, creo que verán cómo se entrelaza con los conceptos que mencione anteriormente. Tanto “The Human Anthem” como “Amyotrophic” expresan desesperanza. Pero “The Human Anthem” contiene un mensaje positivo al final, algo como “no importa lo que estés sintiendo, solo tienes que hacer lo necesario sin ningún remordimiento” e “intenta alzar tu voz aún más”. Sin embargo, en “Amyotrophic” solo hay desesperación y sufrimiento. No es necesario estar positivos todo el tiempo de una manera forzada. Las personas que le han prestado atención a CHOKE todo este tiempo entenderán que esta banda seguirá adelante y mientras vamos causando alboroto a nuestra manera, y con eso es suficiente.

Ciertamente en el caso de CHOKE, la verdadera esencia de tu trabajo no siempre queda clara con tan solo ver el video musical o escuchar la composición, sino que se hace más fácil de entender una vez que leíste la letra.

REON: Sí, es bastante rebuscado (risas).

B5: Las emociones humanas son propensas a experimentar cambios violentos; son grotescas y caóticas. Tanto en la composición como en la letra, “The Human Anthem” está vinculado a esta representación de la mente humana. No es una interpretación errónea, realmente quisimos glorificar los valores individuales los cuales nos hacen humanos. Aunque tampoco queremos mezclarlos con las personas que, ante los ojos de la ley, cometen crímenes horribles y causan tragedias. Pienso que, si la gente llega a entender esos detalles importantes, podría disfrutar aún más de la visión de CHOKE.

REON: Las circunstancias actuales aún no nos permiten realizar conciertos como lo haríamos normalmente y eso solo hace querer presentar aún más estas canciones en vivo a la gente tan pronto como sea posible.

CHOKE es una banda emergente de nu-metal/visual kei de Japón. Comenzaron con el objetivo de crear un sonido único mezclando rap metal con djent. Su música experimental, sin embargo, no se limita a un solo género y ha evolucionado desde su formación en 2017. CHOKE han incorporado a su sonido influencias del hard-core, trap-core, metalcore, thrash y groove metal. Al mismo tiempo, también incorporan elementos electrónicos, sinfónicos o progresivos. La excéntrica banda de metal rap/visual kei CHOKE ha deconstruido géneros con su primer sencillo digital “No problem at all” lanzado en junio. Ahora están listos para sorprender al mundo con “The Human Anthem”, cuya distribución en línea empezó el 11 de septiembre de 2020.

CHOKE inició actividades en la escena underground de Tokio, Japón en el 2017. Sus lanzamientos son prueba de su afán de experimentar para así crear su propio sonido. El vocalista REON, el guitarrista KVYA NONO y el bajista B5 han demostrado que no están aquí para seguir patrones sino para crear un nuevo camino.

Al ser una banda independiente, han estado sacando provecho de la distribución digital la cual les ha permitido entregar su música al mundo. Aunque sus álbumes “CHOKE 1” y “CHOKE2” han estado disponibles para su compra mediante descarga en su tienda en línea oficial, el grupo ingresó a las plataformas de descarga y streaming con el lanzamiento de “No problem at all” el 5 de junio.

El sencillo digital “No problem at all” fue el primer trabajo con su nuevo baterista de soporte Toshiya Sato. Esta canción parece ser el primer paso de la banda hacia una dirección más extrema. No problem at all es una pieza intrincada nacida de la reconstrucción de varios géneros ensamblados en una sola pista. Con un comienzo lleno de trap, la composición conduce a un flujo inconexo de diferentes estilos que crea una progresión inesperada. La canción presenta el rap fresco de REON, el cual alterna con guturales graves y gritos penetrantes. One of a kind Rap Metal/Visual Kei band CHOKE deconstructed genres with their first digital single “No problem at all” released in June. Now they are ready to shock the world with the single “The Human Anthem”, to be distributed online on September 11, 2020.

CHOKE started activities in the underground scene of Tokyo, Japan in 2017. Their releases are proof of their willingness to experiment to create their very own sound. Vocalist REON, guitarist KVYA NONO, and bassist B5 have been showing that they are not here to follow patterns but creating a new path.

As an independent band, they have been taking advantage of the digital distribution which has allowed them to deliver their music to the world. Although their albums “CHOKE 1” and “CHOKE2” have been available to be purchased via download at their official online shop, the group joined the download and streaming platforms with the release of the single “No problem at all” on June 5.

The digital single “No problem at all” was the first work with their new support drummer Toshiya Sato. This song seems to be the first step of the band moving into a more extreme direction. No problem at all is an intricate piece born from a reconstruction of various genres assembled into a single track. With a beginning full of trap beats, the composition leads into a disjointed flow of different styles that creates an unexpected progression. The song features REON‘s groovy rap that switches into low growls and penetrating squeals. A sui generis experience that might be hard to understand for the first time but it will draw you back for more.

The lyrics of No problem at all are also controversial. Instead of accepting the general opinion because that is the “correct“ behavior, CHOKE instigates you to make your own judgment. In a society where the masses consume easy-to-get information without questioning to avoid confrontation or even just because of their lack of interest, people are losing the confidence to express their ideas and stand up for themselves.
